This can be an
ongoing volunteer project for the semester! RSVP is a must!
*Letters will be
provided.
WHEN:
Contact
Elizabeth Skinner to RSVP in advance; orientation will be held at
the school in mid September on how to talk to hospice patients
WHERE:
Training -- Location To-Be-Determined
Opportunities -- provided in patients home or at a facility
WHAT's INVOLVED:
Volunteers will normally
visit a patient in their home or at a facility. Volunteers are usually accompanied on the first visit. Volunteer opportunities exist throughout
the entire Atlanta area and surrounding counties. For those needing
flexible schedules or who are uncomfortable with making home visits we
do have an Inpatient Unit in Riverdale which is open 24/7. Volunteer
actives normally include providing emotional support and socialization
through reading, talking, and listening. Additionally, volunteers can
help around the house or yard, running errands, or allowing the
caregiver some time away from home. Volunteers can be creative in the
time spent with their patients (i.e. journaling the patient's memories
or creating scrapbooks with the patient/family members). Individuals
helping at the inpatient unit can assist with issuing food trays,
feeding the patient, and providing socialization and emotional support.
HOW:
Each volunteer is
required to:
1.)
Undergo training
2.)
Background check required
3.)
Be evaluated by a physician or Nurse Practitioner stating he/she is free of communicable
diseases.
4.)
Undergo a two-step TB test. A volunteer may provide proof that he/she
has received the
TB tests.
5.)
Hep B shots up to date
**These are required by the government.
Other documentation
that will need to be provided is a:
1.)
Copy of each individual's driver's license
2.)
Copy of auto insurance
3.)
CPR certification. If a person is not CPR certified they will need to
watch a video (not
actual certification).
